The Lower Dalälven- a Swedish Ramsar site Färnebofjärden is also part of the larger Dalälven-Färnebofjärden Ramsar site. Such sites are included on the so-called Ramsar list of valuable wetlands that have been designated all over the world in accordance with the Ramsar Convention.
Färnebofjärden is classified as a Ramsar site because it is a good example of a relatively unspoiled river system in an area
that contains over 75 red-listed species and large numbers of wetland birds. The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of international importance, especially as habitats for wetland birds, is named after the place in Iran where it was adopted. It is the first modern convention that deals with the preservation and sustainable use of a natural resource, and the only one that is concerned with a specific type of ecosystem, i.e. wetlands.
Among the commitments specified in the convention are the following: to include preservation of wetlands in land-use planning.
to establish nature reserves.
to co-operate on the preservation of wetlands, especially those which extend over the boundaries of two or more countries.
to select at least one wetland area to be included on the Ramsar list of internationally valuable wetlands, and to preserve said area.
Additional information on the Ramsar Convention is available on the web site of the Convention or of the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency.

Known in Swedish as the “Dala violet“, this exquisitely beautiful spring flower is worth travelling many miles to see. Wander about on Mattön Island in late May and you are sure to see it gleaming amidst the leaves of the previous autumn.
